In the last part Spring and Gail (I think?) said that Spike was under pressure when he was so mean to Harmony in episode 2. Lori said the same about Angel when Spike materialised in his office. So I started thinking (and I am reasonably sure that the following post will be comprehensible and interesting to no-one but me) that maybe cognitive load (also called attention span) affects the ability of the soul to monitor and control behaviour. Thus people cannot think about everything at once - the cognitive load is too high. When they are in a new situation and trying to process the situation and the situation is stressful there is no attention left to adequately monitor their behaviour. Consequently a certain soullessness appears (i.e. they lash out). Using this theory lashing out when under stress happens to all people. The trigger point varies from person to person, situation to situation. The lashing out resembles soulless behaviour. Some monitoring is automatic. Hence, most people will not lash-out randomly, but choose their targets. (Fred, Wesley and Gunn were not targets). Their method of lashing out (fighting, rudeness) is also automatic. In cognitive thoery - cognitive load is significantly reduced by how automatic a behaviour is. Jane Austen suggests in "Mansfield Park" that good manners is not simply the curbing of your natural impulses for the sake of appearances but the elimination of those impulses. Behaviousr under pressure or when one loses a soul shows why that needs to be the case. Just a random couple of thoughts. Excellent points, Kerrie. And as with almost any human behavior I believe some of the seemingly "automatic" responses can be at least partially changed with enough practice. By which I mean even the most immature people (with the least control) can learn to raise the bar on their lashing out trigger point with enough discipline. (Isn't this part of what parents are supposed to be teaching their children during the socialization process? Too many are falling down on the job and excusing "soulless" behavior in their own offspring!

CNN has been showing the CA fires all day. How close are you guys? And, strangely, if you go to the website and bring up the world map, then north america--when I drag my mouse over your two names the "nametag" flickers wildly (in and out of Hell?). Everyone else's name and locations come up and stay, but I can't get Anne's or LadyDi's to stabelize. Sunspots or the fires or Moloch? Hi, Sue, thanks for the kind thoughts. The big fires in San Bernardino and Riverside are at least 40 miles east of us. My in-laws live out that way, but not that close to the fires. There's been a huge pall of smoke from that direction the last couple days; the sunlight is really weird and reddish. It's been snowing ash all over Orange County since yesterday; swirling around the parking lots and covering everything. It's weird seeing that kind of images of a place you know - the firefighting teams are working from Glen Helen Regional Park, which is where the So Cal Ren Faire is held, so we know that area. I think the other one is in Santa Clarita, which is just outside of LA going north-ish, but I'm starting to lose track. In any case, we're not directly affected by any of them, thank goodness. I think LadyDi is further north; she lives in Cambria, doesn't she?

Hi. Thanks for the warning, Sue. I am here now. Just about to go and adjust the clocks. Daylight savings started at 2 am here. Good thing - it will be light when I go walking at night. I was walking last night, following some creepy guy who walked slower and slower as we got to the darkest and remotest part of the walk. It turns out he thought I was stalking him! I thought it was funny. Daylight savings time is a pain. Why does everything have to have a clock in it? I have to make a list twice a year, so I don't miss any of the clocks. Grumble, grumble...

Lee,
Too bad you are not here--it's not really fair to mock Alabama behind your back. (Altho I may regret the mocking since it's still tied 13-13 in the 4th quarter.) But Mike just went for the score on 4th down and came up pointless.
Not that I care much for UT or Phil either.
Mary--
"My" big win of the day: Northwestern over WI for their homecoming! I'll have to call Tom later.

I think that is so true - I know for myself it is. If I am trying to do too many or too stressful things at one time, I am much more apt to lose my cool and strike out at people. Same has to be true for our vamp friends, as fictional as they are.

Good idea about Spike being given control of AI; but he's not yet ready for it. After he's had a bit more experience working with humans and demons as a fighter for good, then he will be ready. But Spike has only recently become the being he is now, souled, his own man, etc. I'm not sure he's up to being in charge of an agency. Can you imagine Spike dealing with paperwork or keeping track of things? Not to mention just having the patience to do the small, boring stuff that comes with any detective job.
But I could see Spike as a vampire detective. He wouldn't want to work alone, though. He likes being part of a couple, a team, a family...Maybe Buffy or Dawn? Wishful thinking I guess. Fred? That would be cool, with someone to answer the phones (something for Cordy to do when she awakens). [glow=red,2,300]GAIL [/glow] Spike, vampire detective, surrounded by attractive, friendly women to flirt with when business gets slow - he'd love it. If Dawn goes to college in LA (not impossible), she could hang out with her "uncle Spike" in her free time. I'm getting weird again, sorry...

This is the height of ego, but you know I have been 'checking in' with the progress of my weight loss program...and my 'in progress' self is now newly shown on my S3 profile. After Halloween, my avatar will change to another 'in progress' pic taken at the same time. I still have miles and miles to go before 'done' - if that ever comes, but if you go look at my convention pics, you can see why I am kinda happy with the new pics.

Vlad said: "Let's look at this another way. Waht are grave robbers? Tehy are folks, demon, human or "other" that steal bodies for profit. Not a necessary thing at all in the world. The demons that ate the babies...let's jsut suppose for a minute that they eat these babies less for "fun" and more for nutritional content. They have a need for babies, of soem nature, much as a vampire has need of blood.. Now, since we know that vampiires CAN exist on the blood of animals and not people, wouldnt it be worth the effort to try and convert these demons with a softer line... to me this is sort of like picking your battles...and your strategies. Makes a lot of sense to me. To reiterate... body snatchers... useless profession for sheer gain. Baby eatin' demon... not totally their fault. Vlad" I don't know, Vlad. If the baby-eating demons can't help it (and I assumed they couldn't) then there is no hope for them. Eating babies to my mind is worse than eating grown-ups like vampires do. Grave-robbing for profit obviously needs to be stopped, but I would hardly call it "urgect" unlike stealing and eating babies. I would have thought Anegel's priorities for evil would be (in descending order): - world destroyers/take-overs - baby killer/harmers - children killers/harmers - other defenceless groups who are picked on by evil (e.g. the sick, the poor) - the rest of humanity based on how much suffering is involved, - animals - the dead. I know that the dead should be protected because of the evil that the demons do whilst using their bodies, but that type of evil just does not seem so evil to me - it is small-scale and disorganised. If it was organised to take over the world then sure it would need to be addressed as priority one, but not otherwise. I'm with Kerrie on this one - any evil that affects the world and/or human life is top priority. Grave robbing on such a small scale is pretty small peanuts compared to eating someone's baby. I bet Buffy would agree with us. By the way, Kerrie, good thoughts on the effects of stress on the soul. I second makd; it's good to have your thoughts on the episodes as you see them. We'll be getting new viewpoints, and thinking about them again. Keep it up, please!

I'm having a good/bad weekend.
First, the bad news -- the girl I was supposed to have spent the day watching Notre Dame lose (her team) and Florida State win (my team) sent me an e-mail telling me she "was sick" for yet another date (looked healthy enough last time she actually didn't cancel on me). Oh, well -- another one marked off the dance card.
The good news -- I just saved a buttload of money on my car insurance by switching to GEICO. No wait, I saved when I left them. Oh yeah, the good news -- Florida State hammered Wake Forest and Penn State lost, so with his 339th win, Bobby Bowden is the winningest coach in Div. 1-A college football.
In other news, all those images of my old home town (the game was played in Tallahassee) made me homesick. Rob and Rae, do you think there's still room enough in Florida for me to move back home? Wonder if I can get a decent job with the state. I'm so over the Capitol Region.

Just checked out your picture on your profile, Patti -- and you are looking like quite the honey. A few more pounds coupled with that red hair, and you might get confused for Alyson Hannigan when you go walking the streets. Might want to learn how to add the famous smiley face when you sign things.

Hi Everybody! Ye gods and little fishes -- you people are talky types! I've got to catch up on parts 51-58, not to mention all the side conversations, the reviews, and the other fora! Well, that'll teach me to go away for two weeks!
Hope everyone has been well -- I'm still pretty jet-lagged (unfortunately, it's getting worse as I get older ), and I was out all day today, so I haven't had a chance to read any of the posts (or get any rest -- but I did watch both eps of AtS! ;D). I probably won't be posting for a bit, just lurking and catching up -- but I'm back!
(And yes, I did miss you all. So, are Lee and Josh engaged yet? )
