Well, okay, I will have to actually do work today since, as it is, I'm going to be in the office until all hours of the night for the next few days (Vicky is not pleased), but I have been so negligent in my S'Cubbie duties, so I'll be in and out. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and good week-end. Next week is Buffy Season 5! Oh so damn excited (my favorite season). Mostly I'm quoting John because I like his post title. (And we are fellow season 5 junkies!) Thanks to all who responded to my long post last part. Please forgive me for not going back and collecting names. Strangely, when writing it I wasn't conciously asking for folks to tell me their viewing background, but, given the responses it certainly read that way. It was more an acknowledgement of my own expanding understanding and appreciation of Angel as I catch up on old episodes. My memory is lousy, but it strikes me I may have been reacting to posts which commented on Angel's behavior. The comments were entirely supportable by episode evidence but were phrased "Angel always" or "Angel never"...and I think we all know that hardly anybody in the Jossverse is "always" or "never" anything. I'm just not as familiar with the body of work in the Angelverse as BtVS and I find I personally am increasingly surprised by the times Angel is actually out of character. (I.e. he can be quite funny, charming, caring, etc.) Hence, the, "have you really watched all of Angel and noticed how multi-dimensional he is?" slant of my post. Asking myself as well as anyone. Spring's post in particular sticks in my memory (no surprise there) in that she said (paraphrasing) one needn't have watched everything to make cogent comment on the episode at hand. Entirely true. I'd never have anything to say if I had to look up episodes and scripts everytime I wanted to put forth an opinion. I Again, I think my point was quibbling with semantics (and, again, no surprise there). It's one thing to observe that "in this episode Angel (or Spike or Wes) is..." and even support the observation with other specific examples. But rarely is it supportable to say (or even imply) "character xxx is ALWAYS yyyy." (Oh yeah, and total aside here. I knew that Gunn and Wes came to a parting of the ways over Fred, but I'd had NO idea how close they really were back in season 2 before she showed up. That was a heck of a friendship! Now that I know about it--I miss it.) So, anyway, thanks for the reponses. Seemed like most folks agreed with the second half of the post--that "the hardest thing to do in this world is live in it." I.e, that it's much harder to live as a champion on a day to day basis than to make the once in a lifetime sacrifice. Nan,--yes I see that episode discussion is raging. Maybe someday I'll catch up. I have few thoughts on Destiny which I'm curious to see whether anyone else has mentioned, but reluctant to post until I catch up on other's comments. That said, it is December as you all have noted and my usual list of 101 things to do has naturally expanded to 1001! So, I'll probably just drop and in and out ocassionally. My sister seems to have finally "hit the wall" with regard to caring for Dad, which means on top of general holiday madness my Alzheimer's parent may be coming for an extended visit. (I can't complain, she's had him for 4 straight months.) And, oh yeah, when you all are propitiating the "Gods of Employment" mention "Bob" as well, my sister's husband--also 2 years + out of work--engineer, etc. etc. And yes, they need benefits such as health insurance even more than they need a salary! And, speaking of families. I love my kids... but how can two college kids make the house look like a battalion of marines has moved in? And, really, is there anyone else on this earth (outside of an infant or infantile aging parent) more incredibly self-centered (as in unaware of the rest of the universe) as a college student??? I'm planning on working on my passive-aggressive issues and resorting to just plain: "Get in here and clean up after yourself" over the Christmas holidays! Loathe to leave but RL hitting me over with head with a mallet. Sue

Hello everyone! I honestly don't know how I'm going to catch up with all the discussions, but I finally watched "Destiny" last night, so at least I can read them without spoiling myself. Can I also just say, oh my god, to the last 5 seconds? I think I need to change my avatar. Hi Erin. Did Branson treat you well? Do you ever go to SDC's Christmas festival? Brad and I always loved going there and seeing all the lights, listening to all the entertainment and drinking wassail.........cuz we're dorks

Thanks gals! And, to think, you can't even see the back of it! (There was a third ponytail and a multitude of barretts and ribbon... That's what I get for buying them hair stuff.) And this is why I'm grateful for four nephews and only one niece -- when they're all together, it's usually playing of the "running and jumping" variety, not of the "let's see what we can do to Aunt Laura." So Aunt Laura just gets to look worn out (never "pretty").
(Gotta love 'em, though. I was watching my 5-year-old nephew at hockey practice on Saturday, and no matter what "drill" the coach wanted them to do, the little guy basically just skated back and forth as fast as he could -- he's got a mind of his own!)

It's our biannual dept. meeting this week. Lots of boring stuff I have to take minutes for. Can I say 'blech'? I am fortunate to have my job, tho, and most of the time I enjoy it. {{{{Hugs to all S'cubies who are sick or unemployed or have loved ones struggling with sickness and unemployment!}}}} Hugs to all the rest of you, too. If the apocolypse comes, beep me!

It's interesting how much her view of the necessary development of Spike/Buffy beyond the closing of the Hellmouth resembles mine, in BIL. We're both seeing about the same potential in the characters, just going with it differently; and her story is further along the imagined timeline than mine: what I have Spike fighting to establish, she has as an ongoing operation. But we both see about the same thing: vamps and humans, working together, and Buffy not entirely easy with the fact/prospect. Anyway, read it: you'll enjoy! www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=712

I'm around, except for my brain. Spousal Unit is home sick from work, have to go to Costco with my sister and The Nephew and am so not looking forward to it; he's currently me-averse because I've given him a dose of my parenting style a few times when he's acted more like a three year old than a kindergartener. This involves no touching but a heavy use of The Voice and The Look, along with an age appropriate discussion of precisely where he failed to behave in accordance with his place in the universe.
Of course, a five-and-a-half-year-old, only child, born four days before his mother's 44th birthday, isn't likely to have a realistic concept of his place in the universe.
Julia, my kids are pretty good testimony for my ability to be loving and realistic in my parenting style, so I don't think I've scarred him for life

If the apocolypse comes, beep me!This line was used on one of the repeat over and over and over ad clips for Buffy on FX. I never could hear the line quite right. What I heard was, If the apolcolypse comes, beat me. Which altogether made sense in the sense of not. Glad to have that cleared up.

Seeing the people coming back after vacation absences is almost like going back to school after the summer: all the people you missed are there. Glad to see your smiling face avatar, Rae!

Missed your snark, Erin. Glad you're back! It's been entirely too quiet here without you. I've missed you guys too! I thought I was going to have more internet time, but the computer where I was at was broken, so I was only able to pop on occassionally. Also want to spend some quality time with the "Destiny" reviews. Not entirely sure how I feel about the reappearance of a certain person I thought had a really nice initial exit.

Here is the transcription I promised you yesterday of the JW discourse on Spike and Angel that appears in Angel Magazine, Issue 4, pg 15:
"When we did the 'Fool For Love' flashbacks, we really learned that these guys represented two completely different asesthetics and they've gone through two completely different processes. Angel was the most evil person; he was cursed with a soul. He went through a century of navel-gazing agony before he became a champion. Spike was actually something more of a heroic figure in that he was never as evil as Angel. He was a bad guy and a killer, but he was never quite the sadist Angel was. He was also more of a populist. He really represented the sort of birth of the middle class in the 20th Century. He liked working class people. He liked the plebian stuff. He liked brawls. It wasn't all about pain and poetry. Let's face it - Angel was a puffy shirt and we all know it. And then Spike himself was the most human of vampires who actually went out and sought a soul. It's been complicated for both of them to actually have one, but their processes were so different, their reactions were so different, they are so different...And they're both in love with the same girl. "And James can act. He's good with the acting. He loves to do the work...and everybody who does the scenes with him enjoys themselves because he always comes to play. This is now my eighth year in the Buffyverse - and it's very important that you surround yourself with people who are going to come up to speed every time, because they feed off of each other and they appreciate it."
I will copy and paste this onto the Interviews and Articles thread so it won't get lost here.
