I think that in the last episode, the chemistry between the two shone. At least Wood was exuding chemistry and attraction to Buffy. Buffy (SMG) was simply responding (reacting) to it. I think it's necessary in order for Spike (and the S/B fans) to consider the guy as a legitimate threat. A threat to both Buffy's affections and now a threat to Spike's very existence. And in that sense, it works.

Disagree that the trials weren't hard enough. We only know a small part of the story. We see Spike fight the guy with the flaming hands, deal with the bugs (they don't tell us how he overcomes that one) but we don't know what ALL the trials were, or how long they went on. We DO know that Spike emerges looking quite as bad as he did during his encounter with Glory (season 5) or his subsequent time with the FE. Actually, it's a good thing he IS a vampire. No human could survive what he's been through for the last three seasons.

Fool for Love is on tonight (FX) at 7 p, ET. And the episode on Angel, on Wednesday, 9 p (I think!), WB, is a new one, ending quite a long draught. It's not the one with Willow visiting LA, though--I believe that comes later in the month.

I don't get "sparkage" from NB. I do think he's cute as a button (how cute is a button? I've got to get a life!) I don't get any sparks between Buffy and Wood either. With Angel and with Spike she lit up the screen and threatened to short out my house! I think I'd see more between Wood and Faith.

It's Nick on the right. He's a tad bit heavier than his brother at the moment.

There is no question there is spark between Buffy and the principal. It isn't enough to be in the same ballpark as Buffy and Spike, but it's there nonetheless. I've never really seen much chemistry between Xander and Anya, mainly because I never liked them together. As far as chemistry between Sarah and Nick goes, we never really got much of a chance to go there. The writers used him as the bad guy regarding Buffy and her vampiric lovers...in the rare moments when there was some genuine feeling, it was pretty interesting. Buffy/Xander fans invariably point to he moment in "Phases" when Xander (yet again) saves Buffy's life, and she hugs him in a rare display of gratitude. When she pulls away, for all the world it looks like she's going to kiss him. Holy moley, I nearly fell off my couch....then the moment was gone. I've said it before and I'll say it again: Buffy made a choice--I think unconsciously--not to go "there" with Xander for Willow's sake. Once Angel was out of the picture and Willow had moved on, Xander no longer pursued her in that way...probably because he felt he didn't deserve her. More importantly, his friendship meant too much to her by then, though she sometimes had (and has) a funny way of showing it. In Bad Girls she makes reference to this when Faith can't believe she hasn't "done it" with Xander. When all else fails in her life, Xander is there. One way or the other, he does NOT leave. On some level she understands this and will not jeopardize it. It explains why Xander is the one she most dreaded telling about the affair she had with Spike. If there is one thing that would drive Xander away, it'd be choosing another vampire over him, bringing all his feelings of inadequacy flooding back. Yet again, he isn't good enough for her, but a demon is. To Buffy's everlasting credit, she handled it like a mature adult and went to see him in Seeing Red, my favorite Season 6 episode outside of the musical. Instead of ducking it and waiting for Xander to make a move, she fought for their friendship while never backing down to him. She needed someone who wouldn't let her off easy, and Xander is always the one the writers use for that.

Has anyone else gotten the impression that the whole Spike/Buffy connection is not to her taste? I haven't been able to read the whole interview yet because for some unknown reason I didn't get legible print when I expanded the thumnail images in Internet Explorer and Netscape gave me legible print but wouldn't expand one of the pages. Still, I did read the bit where Sara rated her favorite episodes and not a one of them featured Spike. For a long time I've had a nagging suspicion that the lack of sympathy or sign of conflicted, underlying emotions beneath the cold, stony expressions that Buffy so often presented in many of their past interactions may not have been entirely dictated by the script. Perhaps just as JM's richly nuanced performance has often brought more sympathy to the character than the writers may at times have intended, SMG has chosen to interpret Buffy's response to Spike as emotionally detached as the script allowed. Thoughts?

Yes indeedy...boys and girls...there is new STUFF on the website. First off, Rusty has submitted another chapter for your perusing pleasure. Chapter 6 in her Legions of Gorath story. Give it a read. Not to create a spoiler, but everyones favorite peroxide blonde takes a tumble. I'm not saying more so you'll jsut have to take a look. Second up is Rob Sorneson with Chapter 10 of Truths. Okay...thinking back on this one, there's nothing I can really say without spoiling it. Soooo...it's good, read, enjoy, and thank Rob from the bottom of your souls. Last, but hardly least, is Spring's analysis of Passion. She confided to me that it was a hard episode to do, because of the sheer emotion of the subject matter. Well, don't you fear Spring...it was well worth it. A very, very fine analysis. So for all the fine reading mentioned above go to the The Scubie Website. O boy- I really think SMG struggles with the direction the writers have given to the whole Buffy arc and that would include the Spike/Buffy relationship. JM gave/gives heat/intensity to whomever he is interacting onscreen and so his relationship with Buffy has always sparkled- I too have noted the detachment that SMG has in many scenes seeming to call out for greater displays (not lately, however) and I do not know if it is her reading of the character or her resisting the onscreen chemistry. Buffy and Wood have a definite connection-she looks like she is having fun-flirting-doing a come hither routine and allowing herself to be wowed-they spark alright but I think the forces pullling them apart are very concrete. She is very involved with his mother's killer/he seems to have some madonna/whore issues and she has not resolved her very complicated and still steamy feelings for Spike. Robert- I remember that scene between Buffy and Xander and you are right they did spark- I had forgotten it- So- in retrospect I think Buffy made a very humane, moral decison to not "see" Xander that way. That was her first response to his asking her out for a date- that she was Willow's friend. Xander glossed right over that but it was very important to Buffy. I mean that dance she did against him when she returned from vacation in episode 1 of Season 2 was very hot but she did it to taunt him, hurt Willow and completely fry Angel. Nicholas Brendon has been very sucessful at subsuming what could have been as dark and compelling a figure (vamp Xander? anyone) as any of the tortured heartthrobs into a solid, reliable, ocassionally buffonish, but loveable background character.

This might get me in trouble, but she makes a comment that the original plan, in her opinion, was to have Buffy be with Xander. I think she might have been projecting a little there; I think perhaps it's what SHE wanted once Angel moved on. She was right, dammit. :-) First and foremost to her has always been Angel, however. Sarah's never been shy about her opinions, and if she had her way Buffy would be with Deadboy forever. On the other hand, I think she's done a beautiful job on-screen with JM. Buffy is supposed to be non-reactive to his attention--especially his sexual attention--because she was using him for physical sensation and nothing else. This season she's ever so slowly working her way toward something more meaningful with him, and it's interesting to watch.

Robert, In referring to SMG's often wooden expressions when relating to Spike I was thinking more about this season- at least the first half anyway- rather than season six. What I always admire is when an actor convincingly portrays his/her character as having conflicted feelings. The character is seen projecting an attitude or an opinion which is at odds with other feelings apparent below the surface. JM is a master of the subtly nuanced performance. But I know that SMG is also a gifted actor and there have been times, the *interogation* scene in her bedroom in "Never Leave Me" comes to mind, when I looked for some sympathy below the surface and found none. There have been many, many other moments that I just can't think of right now off the top of my head, with the snow falling and me needing to hit the road. Oh, in the shooting script of "First Date" the directions call for her to show slight disappointment when Spike tells her that he's okay with her going out on a date. I didn't see any signs of disappointment, only awkwardness. deborah

It kills me to say it, but Buffy was right to reject Xander in Season 1, and sadly the writers never gave him another opportunity to take the shot. Buffy had a clearer picture of what was going on in their little triangle than he did, because he saw with his heart first and his brain second. I truly believe he had no clue Willow was as into him as she was. All Willow saw was Xander. All Xander saw was Buffy. All Buffy saw was Angel. All Angel saw was Xander sticking a cross in his face and forcing his sorry ass to lead Xander to the Master's Lair so the girl who had shattered his heart could be saved from death. I guess it's fair to say I have issues with Angel in those early years. It's always bugged me that it was never made clear to Buffy that it was Xander who was willing to go to that terrible place to save her, NOT Angel....but I guess it still wouldn't have been good enough for her. It was Angel she wanted, no matter what. Clearly I still have issues with Angel and Buffy. It's actually sort of funny; I love Angel now. As long as he remains as far away from Buffy as possible, I'll be satisfied.

Spring said, "Does anyone think she sparks with Robin Wood? I think there is more chemistry there than there was with Riley, but it is far from overwhelming at this point It is very *underwhelming* to me. Personally, I'm hoping he winds up with the same fate as the other Sunnydale High Principals. (Chomp!) Since the Buffster's chemistry with Riley was in the negative column (a definite ewww), Buffy and Principal Wood can equal zero, and still have more than R/B. All personal opinions...
