I hope Julia is ok. I see where there is some nasty weather happening in her neighborhood. The worst of it was Sunday very early morning, which left me with my outside electrical receptical blown full of water and thence no internet, and also no bathroom lights or fan (those are all on the GFI circuit; we need a rewire and another outside outlet. It's stupid, because we have two 220 circuits unused- the electric forced air furnace and blower haven't been used for a decade- and insufficient 110 circuits). Now it's just raining hard, and except for constant noisy accusations from the cat that it is all my fault we're OK. Julia, I expect there will be flooding in the lowlands soon, but I'm close to 200 feet above the nearest floodable stream- although backed up storm sewers have their own threats to travel.

That's a whole lot of construction, there, not to mention the braiding... Julia, sufficient to give me the willies, that. From scratch, or "just" alterations. [Sewing is a dying art, truly. My mother made a ton of our dresses (Easter, prom, bridesmaid, etc), suits, all of our curtains, dozens and dozens (3 sets) of doll clothes for Shirley Temple dolls and later even some Barbie clothes for my youngest sister, lined coats. I, of course, took sewing in high school Home Ec and made a number of "granny" dresses in the 70's. Nearly all of the curtains in 3 different houses. We purchases a sewing machine as one of those "essential" appliances like a refrigerator or oven (ahead of a TV or microwave, when they were invented). Being bright kids I guess all 3 of them could figure out how to sew on a button, but not much beyond that. Fortunately, the need to hem everything to within 1/2" of whatever current fashion/fad dictates is the "right" hem length as gone the way of girdles and beehives. Not just for dresses and skirts but even pants -- they can be worn any length from below the knee to 3 inches too long and either rolled up or dragging. And when it's absolutely necessary I know Carolyn just takes things to an alter-er (tailor?) Neither of them will ever own a sewing machine and the P(H)FDIL (Potential (Hopefully) Future DIL) is even more career oriented, less 50's housewifely. So, yay for grandmothers who can still sew! It's "from scratch" and the construction is killing me despite the fact that I'm taking an unconsionable number of short cuts. Fabric glue, I love you.

I did competetive 4-H sewing for ten years, and am, as a result, such a relentless perfectionist that I'm useless for almost all sewing. Also I hate it with a deep and abiding fury. Anna has taken sewing in middle school and then Costume Shop as part of her BA: she's getting a little sewing machine for Christmas. Julia, she likes it: again, that which the parents had shoved on them as kids has rarity value to their children.

Apropos of nothing (except maybe Spike's pants)... I am loving my new Levis which fit without showing muffin top and are just the right tightness ... and the best part? I got them for $7.99 - 5% at the Goodwill. Score! Win! I am so loving the resurgence of Spike's pants.

I'll take care of the new part, just give me a bit to work on it since it's lunchtime & I'm covering the front office by myself until 1:00pm.

GET THE WINCHESTERS THE COVER THEY DESERVE! www.tvinsider.com/coverpoll/index.phpOK, I did it. But I gotta say, it made me feel all dirty and used - like you only want me for my vote for your precious Supernatural.

sewing: might have enjoyed the 'making things' part if I could have ever left out the 'attaching them to your fingers' bit. ... my aim, it needed work...
