We may need to plan an upper midwest meet up some time in the next year. I'll start saving up for it now! I hope your move goes well, Michelle! Thanks, Karen! Three days driving a moving van with my sister. Oy. But I think it would be great if we could a meetup at some point!

So when I move, I think I am going to get go without cable and see how it goes. I will have internet and Netflix, but there is so much interesting (and not so interesting) TV that I like to watch. I know I will miss it, but I think I'm going to try it for awhile and see how it goes.

I know I will miss it, but I think I'm going to try it for awhile and see how it goes. Not to undermine your resolve, but this is such a good segue: Have watched 2 episodes of "Go On" with Matthew Perry, meh. I'm just not that into sitcoms. Although I am a fan of Community and Big Bang. [Not Modern Family or Office. Maybe I would like Parks and Rec but not going back and getting into it.] So far I think the only new pilot I've seen is "Revolution" and I'm in for now. Found the first episode fast-paced, decent writing, decent acting (maybe slightly above decent for both), fair amount of intrigue, one 2 minute action scene that really was quite remarkable. Hard to say after only one ep but since I often don't get sucked in by pilots this is so far a positive sign (although Heroes of course went major south after one year and Flashforward after only a few episodes, and there was that other one with the aliens in the snow ] and Alcatraz was just boring. JJ and Kripke are both executive producers, so we will see.

Well, I"m back in the guest room.
Now Jim either has my cold or his allergies have bloomed and he sounded like a freight train.
Didn't even help to roll him over.

Hey, y'all. The entire state of Washington is under code red fire danger, how's that for over-doing it. West of the Mountains is in particulary bad shape since (1) There's heavy annual vegetation from the wet first half of the year that is now gone to seed and drying out and (2) it's chilly and overcast and people forget how combustable even chilly dry vegetation is.
Sam's been living under extremely unhealthful air quality for more than a week now; they came over the pass to get away from it last Sunday, but I doubt they can afford it today, maybe as far as the west slopes of Snoqualmie or something but even then you have to go up hill to get above the smoke coming through the gap.
I guess the Table Mountain and Wenatchee Complex fires are making the national news, finally, but for me... I've been in communication with Sam and reading my friend Pauline's (who lives in Cashmere) fb posts where she's been showing news footage of the fire and the horrible air quality since the first day of the fires, and wow. There's been bad fires before, no mistaking that, but not this combination of big fires and still air- these are a complex of dry lightening fires followed by a long period under a static high pressure system where the worst recent fires have been intentionally or accidentally human-caused and spread by the high winds which are typical of this whole area.
I can smell smoke every morning, and live surrounded by rampant vegetation, and I am freaked the hell out. The best I can do is keep the sprinklers going, and it's not an optimal solution, to say the least.
Julia, and there's no measurable rain in sight, how fun.

On the other hand, middle TN has glorious fall weather and forecast and Chicago has been having an actual fall. (I suppose Chicago is one of those locations, like Siberia, which might possibly benefit from global warming -- you know, except for the farming and lack of food issues.)
That was one of the fun parts of "Revolution" -- see the Chicago locations and references.
And "Nashville" is in TVGuides "Top Ten New Shows" and EW's "Top FIVE New Shows."
Intrigued by Andre Braugher's "Last Resort" and planning on checking out Jonny Lee's version of Sherlock Holmes in "Elementary."
[One review mentioned (via "disclaimer") the seemingly Republican message of the militias and how regular citizens were denied the right to bear arms in Revolution. I took it as a warning about arming roving bands rather than a warning about disarming the general public. But further discussion would need to go on the OT thread. .... Besides which I don't think the show intended any political commentary at all.]

The clear and present upside of having a task you wish to avoid is how many small, niggling, little things you accomplish in the avoidance of the larger task.
Also, next week is pretty much "episodes in home ownership" with repair visits scheduled with Sears (washing machine isn't spinning); Heat/Air folk re some melted connections between AC and house; and handyman who needs to repair ceiling of Allison's closet now that it appears we've actually fixed the leak that cause the closet issue. All bedrooms are in disarray as I had to empty out Allison's walk in closet that is currently home to 8 years of accumulated apartment stuff.

Workout good, but muscles are not reacting to me. I wanted to make a nice bag to transport my hoopskirts in. Have materials but no energy. Maybe after lunch/nap.

Hee. Paul found one of our mutually favorite movies on cable - Them. Giant ants in the LA river bed, gotta love it. Not to mention the really cool smart woman scientist and her eccentric father.
So I got curious and did a bit of looking-things-up, and it turns out that 1954 was a good year for classic sf films - both Them and the original Godzilla were released in '54.

And, still with the avoiding:
My annual What I Will Try This Fall List (new shows in italics) and the ones I am most interested in are in green.
Monday: Bones at 7 pm on Fox -- definitely not "must see" Castle -- 9 pm on ABC Revolution -- 9 pm on NBC
Tuesday: NCIS on CBS at 7 pm Vegas on CBS at 9 pm -- less about me liking it than thinking Jim might as he's a fan of Shawn Ryan and Michael Chiklis. (If I cared about sitcoms I'd try to stick with "Go On" and try "Ben and Kate" but I doubt I'll bother)
Wednesday: Arrow on CW at 7 pm (probably record in bedroom and watch while laundry folding. I don't see as a show that Jim would care much about.) Nashville on ABC at 9 pm Chicago Fire on NBC at 9 pm -- I'll watch an ep just because it is filming in Chicago and Carolyn's bf tried out for a role -- but the reviews are mediocre. This is actually a good night for me for TV watching because Jim is a choir rehearsal so I can watch stuff he doesn't care about.
Thursday: The Last Resort on ABC at 7 pm Big Bang Theory on CBS at 7 pm Person of Interest on NBC at 8 pm Elementary on CBS at 9 pm -- this one is going to have to win me over to stand out enough to become a regular
Friday: Fringe at 8 pm on FOX -- def MUST SEE Blue Bloods at 9 pm on CBS -- Jim likes it, otherwise I wouldn't both
Saturday: Doctor Who, when on, but run is so very limited. sports and catching up on stuff not watched during the week.
Sunday: Once Upon A Time -- 7 pm on ABC -- still fun, definitely different than pretty much anything else on TV and mostly well done with good acting and above average writing. A likeable mix of ongoing characters and storylines with flashbacks and sort of "anthology/guest star stories of the week".
New shows I will not be watching:
666 Park Avenue -- despite Terry O'Quinn and the supernatural element the "Rosemary's Baby" vibe doesn't appeal to me.
Beauty and the Beast -- from Matt Rousch at TV Guide (who is generally a big fan of genre shows): "The lady cop has about as much authority as a bar hostess. The so-called 'beast' is a looker with a blemish. Miscast and misbegotten, this is how you desecrate the memory of an 80's romantic-fantasy cult fave." Yikes!
Pleasantly surprised to see it's "only" about 9-10 hours, so barely over an hour a night.
Of course, there are none of the USA or TNT or AMC shows listed here. They come and go on such odd schedules, of course.
