Herself, whose work I find most enjoyable, has a new story (all het all the time) at AllAboutSpike. It's called Disenchantment and on second thought I'm not gonna tell you what it's about except to say it's post-Chosen. The URL is: www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=553

One, it's not clear to me why he changed back. Kind of a reverse Shang-Ra-La going on there but I would have liked more exploration and explanation. Two, Is there going to be a sequel? 'Cause, I can't imagine that their time together before he changed back would not have produced a lasting effect. What do you think?

I just read the very promising beginning of a new WIP that promises to be substantial and long. The writing style is an honorable B+, but the insight into the characters and the dynamic among them is quite good, and the basic thinking behind the immediate situation in which the story opens is also fine. I'm not sure about the plot yet, but I'm certainly prepared to give a writer of such confidence the benefit of the doubt until I've seen and read more. It's called Paradise Rejected, by one Decius. I've written her commending this opening and hoping to be put on an update list. She's not a writer I otherwise know. I found it at the Crypt: www.the-crypt.net/You go to the home page, then look up Decius or try the what's new section. I can't give you a link directly to the story. Those of us who are MOST impatient for a view of Spike's return, this is the first good one I've seen. It's from Wesley's POV, the myriad new slayers are becoming a seriously destructive force, and Spike returns rather in the manner of Angel except fully clothed, memory and faculties intact...and the soul apparently lost somehow in the process of trans-substantiation, or whatever it is. I thought there might be some S'cubies who, like me, are really hungry for a well done first taste of what (maybe) is to come.

Here's a couple of short fanfics I just read that I want to recommend, with a caveat. They are by Fayjay and take place in LA just after Spike's S1 crossover episode "In the Dark" on AtS. The names of the stories are "Truth and Claw" & "Truth and Law": www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/fayjay/index.htmI like them because Fayjay captured the Spike of that time period so well. Pre chip, he is still the big bad, still finding glee in his power and skill as a top predator. Dumped twice by Dru, settling for an affair with Harmony, and still reeling from his loss of the gem which he'd labored so long and hard to recover for himself, Fayjay succeeds in capturing his depression and bitterness, his impatience, his glee at being a top predator and his lust for unlife in his thoughts, voice and behavior. Now, here's my caveat. The second story which is a sequel to the first is Slash; S/W&H lawyer. It was still a really good story though. The sex was all about Spike taking what he wanted but his motivation was more than simple physical attraction or hunger. It also involved him asserting his dominance over a cocky but very attractive lawyer who had exhibited an irritating lack of fear around Spike as well as his feelings of rivalry and revenge toward Angel, in that the W&H plan involved the lawyer playing a key role in their plot against his grandsire. Even if slash totally turns you off and you don't want to get anywhere near it you can still enjoy the first story. I didn't realize the sequel was slash until I was reading it but the characterizations, dialogue and plot were so good that I kept reading in spite of what I usually find distasteful. It was made more tolerable too by his partner being a W&H lawyer. If it had been S/Scooby or Scooby associate would have backed out of there as soon as I had an inkling of what was to come. But I have no personal investment or emotional attachment to this lawyer and Spike's use of him seemed entirely plausible in this story.

Just finished a teriffic 2 book-long fanfic based on AtS at the point when baby Connor has been taken by Holtz and Cordy has returned from her vacation with Groo. They discover Drusilla had a key to a time machine and has gone back to prevent Angel being given a soul. From this, multiple plots, quite a lot of superb dialogue, and excellent characterizations flow. Because what they're confronting in the past is active versions of the Fatal Four: Darla, Spike, and TWO Drusillas! Angelus is pretty much out of the action, but appears from time to time. On the side of the good guys are Angel, Cordy, Gunn, andf Fred, with a brief cameo by Wesley. I can't imagine anyone not liking this one. The URL: www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/ruthhanna/html%20files/fiction/angel/stitch/stitch1_1.htmOn the assumption you may like this writer's work as a whole, the URL of the main page is: www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/ruthhanna/

Cousinjean, she of Perfect World and Dancing Lessons, which many of us regard highly, has a new WIP beginning on the Extras division of the Dancing Lessons site. It promises to be long; the first 2 parts have now been posted. It's called Dead Leaves & the Dirty Ground, and the premise is that after an apocolypse AFTER Chosen, the result is all magic and magical creatures have been withdrawn from the world. A Shanshu'd Spike, working for human-again Angel at W&H isn't getting much work done because he'd trying to contrive a way into the hell dimension Buffy was sucked into, a la Angel/Acathla, in that magic withdrawal. Consider my recommendation of anything by her her as a given. Here's the URL for this new WIP: randomthought.addr.com/redemptionista/deadleaves_prologue.htmlThen I'd printed one of Miranda's stories, Soulmates, which is pretty good. Mary had recommended it a while back on the fanfic thread: home.earthlink.net/~mlb13/buffy.htmOh yeah, I'd also printed the latest two chapters of Devil Piglet's WIP, Wayward, but I'm going to Email (him/her?) and ask to be removed from the subscriber list for that one. The latest turn of events which has Spike and Nicki Wood making love is a complete turn off to me. This WIP, set maybe mid S7 after Spike's rescue from TFE and his residency at Casa Summers, begins when Spike inexplicably finds Nicki being set upon by Bringers near Buffy's house and rescues her. He takes her inside and is given the task of looking after her. She is weak and disoriented but recognizes Spike, of course, and is enraged at his presence. It had been very interesting, following her reactions and adjustment to Spike, being in the future, Buffy as the Slayer and her inexplicable trust of a vampire, the discovery of her grown son and the current struggle against TFE. Oh, and she's also plenty wigged out by the fact that although clearly still human (respiration, heartbeat, normal sun tolerance) the only food she can tolerate is blood (we haven't yet found out what's up with that). But once it becomes evident that she and Spike are leading up to shagging and a quick skim ahead hoping to find they really don't go there yielded no joy I couldn't bear to continue. I'm sorry, seeing Spike with any woman other than Dru in the proper time frame offends me deeply. The Spike/Anya one night stand was an exception because they were both wasted and their mutual resentment and despair at having been abandoned by the ones they loved supported the outcome. But a Spike and Nicki pairing in an S7 time frame with Buffy in the picture truly appalled me. Principal Wood, once he learns that Spike not only killed his mother but then after her resurrrection has sex with her may prove interesting, not to mention Buffy's reaction, but I doubt my curiousity is strong enough to overcome my disgust. « Last Edit: Today at 10:47am by deborah » Logged -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- deborah

That's disappointing too, because I think she is a good writer. Have you read Roundabout? That's a good Spike/Dawn fic (friendship) with a darkish story about Buffy. It also has some hot Spuffiness if you go for that sort of thing. I really enjoyed it anyway.

I should warn you before you read that there is a character death. If that bothers you, you may want to avoid it. Right now I'm enjoying Miranda's fiction: home.earthlink.net/~mlb13/buffy.htmSo far I've read several of her stories and I like her writing enought to try everything she's posting before moving on to anything new. As for a character dying well, I'm sure I can handle it a lot better that Spike and Nicki shagging.

I just finished the most wonderful story. This is the first I've read by this author. I found the story on www.allaboutspike.com. I did a search on authors and started at "A" and read each description. Anyway, the author of this story is Jericho TGF and the story is called When Eternity Lies in the Balance. Below is a brief description of the story. It's a long one (about 207 pages printed). Here's a direct link to the story -- www.allaboutspike.com/fic.html?id=21Spike is tapped by the PTB's to reset the balance that Buffy's sacrifice upset, but he's none too happy at the PTB's suggestions for fixing it. Post-Gift, Rated R, Spike/Buffy, 82842 words.

Rob, and anybody else who likes competently done Xander/Faith stories, I came across this site and wanted to pass along the word about it.
It's:
www.echonyc.com/~stax/Buffy/nwhepcat/index.htm
and the author's name seems to work out as new hepcat. Very well informed about music, and music appears to be woven into a number of stories.
Nan, I'm far too late in acknowledging this, but thank you so much for the recommendation. The stories are beautifully written, and the characters are all treated decently...which is always important to me. Particularly Xander and Faith, of course. Really, really well done. I highly recommend these stories for anyone who wants to take a break from Spike-centric fanfic for a few minutes. On a side note, this author utilizes the First in a much more intense and compelling way than the show.
