Your attention please.....
Welcome to the 78th Part of the Soulful Spike Society. We invite you to share your thoughts on The One With The Platinum Blonde Hair Who Shall Remain Shirtless, or any of the other characters or events in the Jossverse.
The rules are simple --
1. Post unto others as you would have them post unto you. This includes outright slams of any character or actor (although negative reviews of a performance or character action are always welcome). Again, if you wouldn't appreciate seeing it done to you or your favorite Buffyverse character, then simply don't do it.
2. Limit spoilers (any tidbit of information not having aired within the confines of an already aired episode of a Jossverse show) to the designated spoiler area.
3. Have fun. And if you aren't having fun, then please let one of your friendly neighborhood technopagans know why.
If you are joining us for the first time, we welcome your thoughts and insights. We promise not to bite, and if we do, we promise not to leave any incriminating marks that will get you in trouble with your significant other, mother or boss.

AM REPOSTING FROM THE PREVIOUS PART IN CASE ANYONE'S INTERESTED.
Was listening to some Elvis Costello the other day and one of his songs reminded me of the Spike/Buffy dynamic:
Beyond Belief History repeats the old conceits The glib replies the same defeats Keep your finger on important issues With crocodile tears and a pocketful of tissues
I’m just the oily slick On the windup world of the nervous tick In a very fashionable hovel
I hang around dying to be tortured You’ll never be alone in the bone orchard This battle with the bottle is nothing so novel
So in this almost empty gin palace Through a two-way looking glass You see your alice
You know she has no sense For all your jealousy In a sense she still smiles very sweetly
Charged with insults and flattery Her body moves with malice Do you have to be so cruel to be callous
And now you find you fit this identikit completely You say you have no secrets And then leave discreetly
I might make it california’s fault Be locked in geneva’s deepest vault Just like the canals of mars and the great barrier reef I come to you beyond belief
My hands were clammy and cunning She’s been suitably stunning But I know there’s not a hope in hades All the laddies cat call and wolf whistle So-called gentlemen and ladies Dog fight like rose and thistle
I’ve got a feeling I’m going to get a lot of grief Once this seemed so appealing Now I am beyond belief

The third part of Chapter 15 is up: www.livejournal.com/users/nandibble/5932.htmlAnd a S'cubie has asked to buy a copy of the hardbacked PLOT, a few of which I still have. (Actually she's getting more than one, but let's not complicate things.) Copies you can buy anyplace else are paperbacks with an ugly cover. If anybody else would like a copy, I have something like 5 left. Hint: they make good Christmas presents, and I'll autograph it if asked. They're $10, and I pay postage. That way, I get the full price, not 10% of it as royalties. If anybody else is interested, let me know by PM or e-mail. Thanks for your attention to this blatant piece of self-promotion.

Hi Erin, The most involved procedure I had done caused all my back muscles to go into spasms. I was in intense pain anytime I moved for 4 days. I'm pretty much back to square-one with the abdominal pain. I went to the doctor yesterday and he wants to "give it some time", which means wait until I have to pay deductibles again in January. How's your back?

How's your back? You're so sweet to ask! It's much better; I think the driving and then flying made it worse. Now that I'm back on terra firma and moving around, it seems to be getting back into whack. Grr argh to deductibles and physicians.

I could probably find out some info on my end (working for a medical journal and all) or get some advice from some of the physicians.

I had abdominal surgery last February. They told me the ilioinguanal nerve--runs along the lower right side of the body--is inflamed as a result of the surgery, not a real common complication, but not totally uncommon either. I think I spelled the name of the nerve correctly.

I think I spelled the name of the nerve correctly. I did a little research, and it seems like the pain from this nerve after surgery should last about 6 months, give or take. That might explain your doctor's wait and see approach; although 6 months would have been August. It seems the other option is more surgery.

The steroidal blocks they've done directly over the nerve helped, but not for very long. The block that made my back muscles spasm was in my back where the nerve branches. I guess that one helped, but the pain it caused in my back was worse than the abdominal pain.

Still, that's a hell of a toss-up; would you rather have chronic back pain or chronic stomach pain? i'll keep my fingers crossed for the no pain option for you!

Not counting the copies someone has claimed, at this point there are 5 copies left. If you want one, let me know soonly.

I'm copying something I posted in the last pages of Part 77 (in response to one of Rachael's posts):Okay, so I actually have one. It's actually a long-standing pet peeve with Giles, actually. I caught the end of Passion this morning, and was reminded (again) that, while Angel is to blame for Jenny's death, I also am infuriated with HER. Why, you ask? Well, because for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone who knew what was going on in Sunnydale would voluntarily work after dark in a public building. Yeah, okay, she was surprised to find out he could get in - but WHY? Other vampires had gotten in before, and she'd been there to talk about it. Because Angel had to kill her, for the drama. I know. But I hate when a character I value dies in a totally preventable way. Now, maybe it just wasn't in her nature yet to think about such things. I can excuse that - she hadn't been dealing with vampires for years. But then Giles should have warned her. For that matter, Giles shouldn't have had his office in the school library. Isn't there a sentence in the Watchers' Handbook that says "Do not have your office in a place where vampires can enter uninvited"? 'Cause, there should be. And Angel had already gone all stalky - you'd think they'd have done the spell to keep him out of Giles' house by then. Ahem. Rant over. Still one of the best episodes, ever. Anybody else cry when Giles breaks down at the end? Absolutely. If I hadn't already been in love with Giles, I would have been then.
And I don't fault Giles for not saying anything to Jenny -- after all, she didn't exactly volunteer her information, either. As for having his office at the school, well, I always put that down to the Watcher's Council -- this is the Hellmouth, so this is where you are.
And now for my own "on-topic" post:
I’ve been thinking about S2 Through the Looking Glass since I watched it again yesterday afternoon. I confess I never really thought much about the Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland parallels, but for some reason, yesterday they smacked me in the face. (I also confess that I haven’t read Alice in a long time, so I’m sure I’m forgetting other stuff.) But now that I think about it:
Now, I don’t necessarily know how meaningful this stuff is – for now, it’s kind of nifty. I’ll try to figure out the meaning later.
Oh, and speaking of shooting errors (like Spike's reflection) -- those of you who re-watched S4 Long Day’s Journey last night – did anyone else catch this glaring continuity error? The Beast is in a circle performing his ritual, and the FG attack, while Fred and Wesley start chanting to open a portal. The Beast attacks Gwen, the idol gets knocked apart, and the orb rolls across the floor and stops at the Beast’s feet. Fred and Wes succeed in opening the portal, and the Beast goes through. Everyone stands around congratulating themselves, the Beast comes back, walks over to the ritual circle where the idol is now intact with the orb sitting on top of it, and proceeds to pick up and swallow the orb.
Now, really! There are some continuity errors that can be overlooked, if there have been intervening, later episodes. And there is, as we've been discussing this morning, the "do vampires breathe" conundrum, which makes for endless speculation. But to make such a goof within the same episode -- where from one scene to another the continuity is gone? Has ME ever made a similar mistake? (I commented about this back on ScoopMe!, but nobody responded.)

In the last part several people asked why Spike could smoke but Angel couldn't give Buffy CPR. It was a good food for thought and I think I know why, and although it's probably a fanwank, it's a simple, reasonable answer.
Angel doesn't know how to do CPR.
Howzat?
