This episode was (like all classic Lost eps) twisty and somewhat confusing, but I was very pleased they went back to their thematic roots: Fate and destiny vs. free will. Desmond is walking that line every day now on the Island, and it appears the Island (assuming we accept the notion regarding the Island as a sentient presence of some kind) WANTS him living with that ambiguity. Don't ask me what the point of all that will be, in the end. I believe most of those real-life questions can never be answered completely, so why should I expect the writers to do it for me? I'll just enjoy the ride and let others suss out the polar bearish details. Rob that's the exact attitude I needed to develop in order to enjoy Lost. I had to stop being so analytical (which is hard for me) and learn to enjoy the stories and characters. Which is why I wasn't fond of the Others plot - it seemed less like a "Shangra-La" kind of mystical mystery and more like some conspiracy. *But paradoxically I also don’t want to feel like there’s so much subtext and hidden meanings and stuff I’ll never figure it all out. Like, the Desmond Hume/philosopher name… Maybe that conceit has gone too far? I *Charlie’s name is Hieronymus? As in the painter Bosch, with all those very unusual paintings? I have a framed print of The Garden of Earthly Delights in my foyer. Some info here relevant to subtext and allusions: www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/bosch/*I really liked the idea of the universe “course correcting.” I think we had a discussion of time travel and this very issue related to an episode of Heroes. *So…is Charlie really doomed….or can fate be thwarted? Tune in next year to find out, when four more days in the Lost universe will have passed. ;D

Heh. I love Hurley. The way he just speaks up for the audience.
"Dude, I know how he did it. That guy can see the future."

So, unstuck in time, or living his life for the second time? And, I'm sorry, but "It's about to start raining" isn't such a stunning prediction of the future in England.

So - nothing nefarious, just the undertow. Boy. Charlie really keeps trying to claim territory that isn't his to claim, don't he? "I don't buy this pre-cognitive insanity rubbish." Heh. Charlie is getting quite a few good lines tonight. Get him drunk? That's your plan?! "Thank you for helping Claire not drown." How . . . grudging can you get in a thank you? Heee! But they are cute drunks. Girls with one leg and a heart of gold. Ooooh! Fight, fight! I think coward was the wrong word to use. Flashback time. Cool camera shot - to make it look like he's dead. Ooooh, not just flashback. He actually . . . flashed back when the big boom happened. He went back in time. So, I think it was Rachael who suggested an "unstuck in time" thing. Whoever it is, I think they were right. *bounce bounce* That was me! So now it'll prove to be unforseen (hee) option #3.

Okay. Weird option #3 it is. 'Cause OTHER people can't be slipping about in time, too. It's not parsimonious.

Hey, who is this guy who says "previously on Lost" anyway? Usually it's one of the actors on other shows.
Teaser
Desmond Episode!!!
Raiding Sawyer's stash. Good boys.
They don't know about Eko. So this right after the Eko dies episode.
Desmond's freaking.
Is he gonna strip? No. Jack doesn't take off these many clothes to die in the water and save somebody.
How did Claire get into the water?
Dude, Charlie, you are annoying.

Part I
Picture of Penelope
So she told Sun she was going for a walk when she was actually swimming. You don't go swimming in water like that without telling anyone. Very irresponsible.
Hurley and Charlie as investigators. This should be great.
Going for the drunk angle. Always a classic.
Charlie, you don't get to say "brother." That's Desmond's word.
McCutchen.
That changed his mind?
DAMN!!!!!!
What is this song?
Hi-larious.
I wonder if drinking is good for Charlie's addict recovery.
You're no hero, brother.
Coward. That touched a nerve.
So this is how it happened?
Yikes!
Wait. What?
So he's reliving his life over again?

Part II Desmond trying to get a job from Penny's father, like Jin got a job from Sun's. Respect. It's not the end of the world. Heh. The microwave making the beeping sound. Delivery for 815. Polar bear! Set design. Connection with Michael. He hasn't been in the military at this point. The boat model. and the boat race. He wants dad's blessing. And he gave dad his resume? Whiskey. McCutchen. So it's fricken expensive whiskey. How did it end up on the island? You will never be great man. Ouch! Not worthy of drinking my whiskey. Double Ouch!! Charlie as a street performer. Synopsis of the show. Really does sound crazy, doesn't it. We are on an island, mate. This is England. This is why we don't do drugs. Hee. So was Charlie really there the first time and Desmond passed on by without noticing him?

Part III
Donovan.
Penny's father berates you for not being a great man, and voila you dream of a future where you save the world.
Make your own kind of music.
Jimmy Lennon?
So now it's not happening as he remembers. Cause he changed something.
From what I understand, true love can be just as unlikely.
Why is Desmond so hung up on getting Daddy Widmore's permission?
Ah, she just thought that he wanted a job from Daddy Widmore.
Why do you love me?
Desmond's a good man. Or is he?
An occult shop? Oh, a jewelry store.
Hey, It's That Gal!
Wait. What?
WTF?
She knows everything.
If you don't do those things, every single one of us is dead.
Brain gone explody.

So, Charlie is dead meat?
Maybe. Or maybe the point is to let Desmond see that life isn't predestined. Who knows?
Anyone else notice how much Desmond looks like Dustin Hoffman?
I really liked this episode - I didn't even think it was twisty or hard to follow. Made perfect sense, to me. Plus, I'm far more interested in what the Island is and is doing than I am in what the Others are up to. The Dharma Initiative would be interesting...if they ever TOLD us anything about what it really is and what it really wants.

Part IV Red shoes. Just thought it was a bold fashion choice worth noting. You love Penny, but you have your doubts. Explosion. Red shoes is dead. So white haired lady is like what Desmond is now. So this is like the Dead Like Me verse. The universe has a way of course correcting. Fate and Destiny. You don't do it because you choose to, you do it because you're supposed to. Decision to join the army. Island landscape. No, what is that background of? Ah, there's the picture. He's unemployed. Love's not enough. Being a good man is not enough. Red shoes. Red paint. Coward thing again. So would it really have worked out or wouldn't it? Self fulfilling prophecy? Damn, if you don't have any money, throwing that ring away is a lousy idea.

Coda
Celebrating making the biggest mistake of my life.
I'm pretty sure I've made it before.
And the world rights itself.
And he changed things.
And that's when he woke up naked. Still doesn't explain where his clothes went.
His book survived.
Let me go back. I'll do it right this time.
It doesn't matter what you do, you can't change it.
You're a good man, Charlie [Brown.]
The flashes didn't stop.
I wasn't saving Claire, I was saving you, Charlie. dun Dun DUN!!!!!!!!
Desmond was trying to save Charlie all these times. But also denying him the chance to be heroic. Like the Buffy/Dawn thing.
Charlie's gonna die!?

Just saw an article here claiming that Lost is showing a significant decrease in viewership this last ep. This is bad news, except, maybe this will spur the powers that be into getting the thing back on track - i.e., concentrating on our original Losties and the more basic mysteries. . . dunno. I wish it would.
